When Shepherds Become Predators
A shepherd is called to protect sheep.
Not feed on them.
Not use them.
Not silence them.
Not make them afraid.
In Scripture, God is clear about shepherds. They carry weight. They carry responsibility. They are called to lead with care, truth, humility, and fear of the Lord.
But sometimes a shepherd becomes a predator.
That is not a small thing.
It is not “church drama.”
It is not “just a misunderstanding.”
It is a perversion of the role.
A shepherd is supposed to cover. A predator hunts. A shepherd feeds. A predator consumes. A shepherd guards. A predator isolates.
God sees the difference.
God Confronts Bad Shepherds
In Ezekiel 34, God speaks against shepherds who feed themselves instead of the flock.
“Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks?” — Ezekiel 34:2, KJV
This matters.
God does not ignore abuse done in His name.
He does not bless manipulation because it happens near a pulpit.
He does not call exploitation “ministry.”
When leaders use people for money, sex, status, labor, attention, or control, they are not walking in the heart of Christ.
They are harming the Body.
And the Body belongs to Jesus.
The Church Is Not a Hunting Ground
The Body of Christ is sacred.
It is not a place for predators to hide.
It is not a place for leaders to groom the vulnerable.
It is not a place for people to use prayer language while doing harm in secret.
Jesus loves His Church.
That is why He corrects it.
That is why He cleanses it.
That is why He exposes wolves.
In Acts 20, Paul warns the elders that wolves would come in.
“For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.” — Acts 20:29, KJV
Paul did not say, “Ignore it.”
He did not say, “Protect the image.”
He warned them.
Because love protects.
Signs of a Predatory Leader
A predatory leader may not look obvious at first.
They may be gifted.
They may preach well.
They may know Scripture.
They may have followers.
But fruit tells the truth.
Watch for these signs:
A leader who demands secrecy.
A leader who uses fear to control.
A leader who shames people for asking questions.
A leader who calls accountability “rebellion.”
A leader who isolates people from family or wise counsel.
A leader who uses spiritual language to cover sin.
A leader who harms people, then asks for loyalty.
These are not signs of shepherding.
These are warning signs.
Accountability Is Not Attack
Some people think exposing harm means attacking the Church.
That is not true.
Covering abuse attacks the Church.
Silencing victims attacks the Church.
Protecting predators attacks the Church.
Accountability protects the Church.
Truth protects the Church.
Repentance protects the Church.
Jesus is not afraid of truth. He is Truth.
What Should We Do?
We pray.
But we do not only pray.
We listen to the wounded.
We protect the vulnerable.
We confront sin with wisdom.
We report crimes when needed.
We build safe systems.
We stop making idols out of leaders.
We remember that Jesus is the Chief Shepherd.
Not a pastor.
Not a prophet.
Not a personality.
Jesus.
The Hope
If you have been hurt by a spiritual leader, God is not against you.
He is near to the brokenhearted.
“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.” — Psalm 34:18, KJV
What happened to you did not surprise Him.
He saw it.
He cares.
He can heal what others mishandled.
And He can restore your faith without asking you to deny your pain.
Final Word
We Pray Not Prey is a call back to holy leadership.
A call back to clean hands.
A call back to safe churches.
A call back to Jesus.
Because shepherds are called to protect sheep.
Not prey on them.
